Diet guide

Foods and nutrient content

A varied diet is the foundation. Here you can see which vitamins, minerals and fatty acids common foods are good sources of, how much a portion covers of the daily requirement, and you can read more about each ingredient in the guide. The amounts are approximate and based on the Norwegian Food Composition Table.

The Norwegian dietary guidelines in brief

  • Eat at least five portions of vegetables, fruit and berries every day.
  • Choose wholegrain products, and eat fish for dinner two to three times a week.
  • Include low-fat dairy products in your daily diet.
  • Choose cooking oils, nuts and seeds over butter and hard fats.
  • Limit the amount of processed and red meat, salt and added sugar.
  • The Norwegian Directorate of Health recommends vitamin D supplements (for example cod liver oil) for many, and folic acid for women who may become pregnant.
